Actually, if all AOL did was add a "Slip-like" connection that could drive a winsock DLL, the standardization of the connection/dialogue would be enough to keep it in the game. AOL already manages autologin effectively. The biggest chore in setting up a SLIP or PPP connection is getting through the initial connection script. Every board has it's own set of prompts and delays. In addition, you
may have to set up the router and name-server.
AOL could provide the Router, Name-server, and connection script in an manner consistant across the country at all of their pops. To the user, all of those winsock applications would be just "more aol services".
Actually, rather than being dead in the water, AOL could be a major service for dial-up and occaisional interactive users (about 90% of all residential users, about 10% of all corporate users).
