NEW-LIST Charter - Types of Contributions 06/17/93

We will accept items sent to new-list@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET to
NEW-LIST@NDSUVM1 as long as they follow these guidelines. While we
do not generally censor the items due to the topic matter of the list,
we might not post something if we don't feel it is complete, if it
might cause confusion, or if it doesn't fit the charter of the list.

The NEW-LIST list exists primarily for initial announcements of
new e-mail lists. The format for announcements is contained in the
file NEW-LIST FORMAT available from LISTSERV@vm1.nodak.edu (see below).
New and changed list announcements must come from a list owner,
moderator, or list server administrator.
All new list announcements should have a subject of:
   Subject: NEW: listname - Description

NEW-LIST may also be used to announce SIGNIFICANT changes to a list.
A significant change is one which might prevent a user from subscribing
(for example if the host system or subscription address change). Other
valid changes might be if the purpose of the list changes significantly
or if the list is terminated. The subject will be:
   Subject: CHANGE: listname - description

Finally, NEW-LIST may be used as a list of last resort to search
for lists or make sure a duplicate doesn't exist. YOU MUST search for
the list yourself first! We just don't have time to do this for
everyone and there will be too much noise if we send all of these to
the list. You should try one of the following lists for general
discussions of lists or network questions:
    NETSCOUT NETSCOUT@ITESMVF1 The BITnet/Internet scouts.
    HELP-NET HELP-NET@TEMPLEVM BITNET/CREN/INTERNET Help Resource.
or other similar resources.
All searches should include a statement that searching has been done
and describe any related lists which may NOT be what you are looking for.
All replies should go to the original person doing the search.
The subject for a list search or confirmation will be:
   Subject: SEARCH: description
and they will be sent out as they come in.

Filtering Information

At this time subscribers to NEW-LIST who are members on the primary
host at LISTSERV@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 have some
additional ways they can tailor the information they receive. These
techniques are NOT available for subscribers to the peer list at
LISTSERV@IRLEARN.UCD.IE or on BITNET/EARN as LISTSERV@IRLEARN .

Each NEW-LIST distribution will have one or more "topics" specified
at the start of the subject in the headers. The general format is:
   Subject: topic1,topic2: normal subject line
For example, new lists will be announced with the "NEW" topic:
   Subject: NEW: listname - description
The following topics are avilable:
   NEW For new list announcements
   CHANGE For list changes
   SEARCH For list searches
ADMIN Administrative changes to the new-list itself
   ALL All of the above

When you first subscribe to the list your topic is set to the special
topic "ALL". If you wish to change topics you can send e-mail to
listserv@vm1.nodak.edu (or LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 on BITNET) with the command
in the BODY of the mail:
   set new-list topics=topic1,topic2,...
For example, to change to NEW,CHANGE,ADMIN you sould send the command:
   set new-list topics=new,change,admin
and you would NOT receive the SEARCH mail. If you want to reset your
subscription to all the topics enter:
   set new-list topics=all

Digest and Index Option

If you'd prefer to receive ALL LISTSERV items in a digest form
that option is also available. The digest is issued weekly (early
Monday morning local time) AND whenever it exceeds 1000 lines (so there
may be more than one digest a week).

There is also an "index" option. This is like a digest without any
text. Only the subjects are listed and you may then use LISTSERV
commands to request the item(s) you want.

To set your options send e-mail to listserv@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET
to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 with one of the following commands in the BODY of
the e-mail:
   To receive weekly/1000 line digests:
      set new-list digest
   To receive an index only:
      set new-list index
   To receive normal mail:
      set new-list mail
All three options are mutually exclusive. The topics setting ONLY works
with the normal mail option. DIGEST and INDEX subscribers will receive
all mailings.

Reviewing your Options

For any of the settings above and more you can send the "QUERY"
command to determine your current options (or to determine if you
are subscribed to the list at the specified server). Send e-mail to
listserv@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 with the
BODY containing the command:

   query new-list

The list of your new-list subscription options will be returned.

Obtaining Files

All requests for files related to NEW-LIST should be sent via
e-mail to LISTSERV@vm1.nodak.edu or on BITNET to LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 .
The "GET" command is used to obtain the file. A few of the more common
files are shown with the command to enter in the body of the mail:

  Command Description
GET NEW-LIST FORMAT Format for contributions to new-list
                                 All contributors must read this
GET NEW-LIST SEARCHES Hints on finding lists. All SEARCH
contributors must read this or next.
GET NEW-LIST WOUTERS Article on finding lists by Arno Wouters.
GET NEW-LIST CREATE Some general suggestions if you want to
                                 set up your own list.

These files are also available via anonymous FTP from vm1.nodak.edu.
Once connected enter cd new-list and then ascii (Use text transfer
only). Then use get fname.ftype to get the file. For example,
use get new-list.format to get the NEW-LIST FORMAT file.
