This is rather interesting. Forstmann owns General Instrument of San
Diego, one of the leading suppliers of Cable TV set top boxes and
satellite encryption systems. They also are deep into the design of
digital video for broadband networks using cable and satellite links.
They have been allied with Cable Labs, TCI, and AT&T in the recent past.
One of their first digital TV customers was PBS. They say they are
supporting the MPEG 2 standard, but it may be a proprietary implemention
of the that standard (yes the symantics get real stickly here).
Forstmann is very shrewd.
