I'd also add, try to kick up the number of non-j-courses to at least half
the class-load. The tools are absolutely neccesary to have--along with a
mindset that says, I'm the journalist; computer tools are my assistants;
wherever I go, I'll make it a point to make certain they're the best they
can be, to give me the most free time I can have to worry about content and
coverage.

Which is going to be an even harder task when every story has hyperlinks to
the morgue--It'll soon not be possible to say, "well, that edition's been
put to bed; let's go for a well-deserved brew!" Because they'll never be
done (Image, even weeklies become like AP, Reuters, UPI, "a deadline every
minute"--except it'll be "a log-on (from a reader) every minute".  I
shudder to think that folks will once again have to work the kind of shifts
Newsday used to have (copy desk, 8:00 and 8:30 PM to 3:00 and 3:30 AM.
Drive in to Manhattan with the rising sun at your back, never catch a wink
of sleep that's under cover of night. We got so's we had some real
sympathy for the rest of the "service industry" who kept the world
"working" while others slept. (entertainers, police, sanitation, waiters &
cooks, newspaper folk, broadcasting folk, what else?)

end, random recommendations and recollections.
