Another rationale has to do with the typical dial-up Internet connection 
that most people have. Many LA Times stories are notoriously long, and if 
you have it on one screen, by the time the user has slogged through the 
piece his ISP has probably dropped his connection. Till we get out of the 
Jurassic period of the net and have always-on connections, this probably 
should be a consideration. (I suppose you could configure a page with a 
long article so that it rotates ad banners every few minutes to get 
around the problem.)
