I have just finished the second year of studying for my degree in photography at
university in Manchester, England and am about to take a year out before my third
and final year. During this time I will be participating in the experience of a lifetime
as a crew member on the Clipper '98 Round The World Yacht Race. This voyage
will take me on a complete circumnavigation of the planet and give me
photographic opportunities that would not only guarantee the successful
completion of my degree, but also be fundamental in launching my career. I have
been accepted after application, interview and training and now have only to cover
student, including myself, merely dreams of ! However I have already become so
determined to go that being prevented by lack of funds would be devastating.
The voyage leaves on 17th October '98 and stretches over ten months visiting
places such as San Salvador, Havana, Panama, Shanghai, Hong Kong,
Singapore and Cape Town to name but a few. It also includes overland
explorations, for example, The Great Wall of China and game parks in Africa and
has in the past invoved schemes like taking street children fron Cape Town out on
the yachts. I want to not only fully participate in this but also make an in-depth and
detailed record of the trip through my photographs.
Unfortunately I have to raise the balance before I can undertake this gruelling
challenge and reap the benefits of its photograhic potential. So far I have been
sponsorships although I have also been helped by The Prince's Trust ( President,
HRH The Prince of Wales). I am now looking for more individuals or companies
that would be able to help me complete the fundraising and any amount you feel
you could spare would be very gratefully recieved. You would be automatically
acknowledged in my final year exhibition that will be open to the public in June
2000, and on my web page.
An editorial of the race will be running regularly in The Times newspaper in Britain
and the Clipper web page will be up-dated constantly with photographs, reports,
positions etc. This site also includes biographies of the skippers and crews, a
virtual tour of the yachts and information about equipment used, sponsors and
contacts within Clipper. In addition to this my web page will provide an insight into
the voyage from my viewpoint and this will be developed as the race goes on so it
will be possible to keep up with my progress throughout the ten months and truly
feel a part of the whole expedition. Click on addresses below and bookmark for
future access and up-dates.
Any donation that is at all possible would be extremely welcome and cheques may
be made payable to "Kate Lye - Clipper Fund" and posted to the address below.
Alternatively money may be transfered into the account of the same title (no.
7648262) which is held with Lloyds bank in Britain. I will be continuing my training
later this month and would like to have the majority of funding secured to allow me
to concentrate fully on what will be a long and arduous program. I very much hope
that you will be able to help me and look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Kate Lye
