I attended a meeting of my local city council tonight, leaving a letter
encouraging them to read an article by syndicated columnist Neil Pierce
about cities that have taken independent action to secure broadband service
to their communities.

Our city is in the final stages of an incorporation effort and I can tell
the council has barely begun to think about these issues - - but they do
know they want a web site. Just so the council has the widest range of
options to consider, I'm thinking about suggesting they partner with a
local ISP or even a local newspaper rather than use scarce resources -- or
even scarcer expertise -- to have an official, city-staffed web site.

My thinking is that a web site with city council agendas, proposed
ordinances, contact information etc. is the modern day equivalent of the
legal notices that are still a source of income for many small papers. Are
there very many papers that have taken on the task of hosting or
maintaining official city sites? How are these site segregated from
editorial or advertising content? Or are they?

Any thoughts or insights appreciated . . .
