the whole discussion about portals rightly focuses on their similarity to
broadcast TV but fails to ask whether that model works on the web. It
doesn't, to me, because it's a mass market answer to what's essentially a
microniche medium.  The newbie argument, though it comes to the same
conclusion, doesn't work because the mass market will always be newbies.
But portals fail because the web empowers buyers to demand what they want,
put together in just the way they want. excite gets closest to this with my
excite, but the real value in consumers is in targeting accurate buying
profiles and lifestyles far more than a mass market entry point can
possibly deliver..


something like a local lifestyle butler is what we'll see, I think, with
entrepreneurs addressing geographically dispersed interest groups -- think
some of the collectibles auction sites in their next evolutionary stage
