I believe the term "Daily Me" was coined by Max Frankel in a New York Times Magazine article about 3 years ago; I have a copy of it somewhere.


Apple, which was heavily involved with The MIT Media Lab, also did some pioneering work with the personal newspaper in 1986-88 for the first of their Apple Information Services.  In fact, Negroponte accompied us at Apple on some of our investor pitches, most notably to the Los Angeles Times courtesy of Jim Holly; the LAT would have come through if Apple hadn't pulled its share of the funding at the last minute.


Apple's attempt failed because, among other reasons, they were pushing broadcasting the personal newspaper over the FM sideband instead of over standard modem-compatible modem lines.  Unfortunately, they wouldn't add a standard $0.75 modem chip to the FM sideband decoder, and skyscrapers/steel buildings couldn't receive the transmissions.  So there, for the price of a modem chip, went a great early concept that's only beginning to be approached now.....We had some really great people working on that project, including Donna Dubinsky, formerly president of the companies responsible for the Palm Pilot, some great designers/programmers.
