Winners and Losers in the Newspaper Business

Web sites run by some newspapers are beginning to show significant
profits, according to the cover story of the current edition of Editor &
News Industry. Researched by journalist and new media consultant, Peter
Zollman, the article details how some newspaper companies have found
business models that are generating significant margins: Thomson
Newspapers will rack up $2 million in online profits this year, while
Morris Communications of Augusta, Ga., will clear $1 million from its
interactive enterprises. On the down side, the Charlotte Observer of
North Carolina has lost $1 million on a failed online business directory
