With the Web I now have the opportunity to read daily the online versions of
the Washington Post, the New York Times, USA Today, and ABC News. I also
take the opportunity, about once a week, to read the online version of my
hometown newspaper two states away. I even occasionally read the online
version of a newspaper in a town in the same region as my hometown.
When I read my local newspaper, I generally can skip the national and
international coverage because I have already read most of it,
particularly the A.P. coverage. The local print newspaper provides local
and state coverage. Its Web site does not include local news coverage.
Community newspapers probably will survive, in print and online versions,
because they have a specific franchise. Newspapers with national
circulations will survive because of their resources for national and
international coverage.
What is in doubt is whether regional newspapers will survive. They
generally have outgrown their community coverage, and they do not have
the resources to move into the national ranks. I think the Web, with its
access to national newspapers, will be the undoing of the regional
newspapers.
