I can't see either local news sources or local ISPs becoming portals unless
they change what they have to offer. There is currently no local site I
would designate as my home page. Right now Excite offers me much of what I
need locally (weather and TV listings, for example), while providing me
much more financial, entertainment, and national news than any local site
offers me.

When I want to read a newspaper online, I'm much more likely to visit The
New York Times or USA Today than the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, or
Boulder Daily Camera (all of which I receive in the print versions).

What becomes quickly evident when visiting local newspaper sites
(particularly ones which show the national and international headlines
before the local ones) is how much of what they offer is wire service stuff
and not unique to them.

As for checking my local ISP site for updates--I never do that. If the
company sends me an email about a change or problem, I'll read it. But
otherwise I have no interaction with the company.

On the internet, I am much more topic driven than location driven. I'd
rather pull articles on relevant topics from hundredas of news sources than
to start with a site which happens to be based where I live.

Suzanne
