Solution: 
   Cookies + Email automation.  Cookies work great if user is on same
machine regularly.  Email allows user to request their password
automatically if they forget.  Since you only send the password to the
email you have registered.  Yes there is potential for abuse should
someone be snooping packets but no more so than with cookies or any other
authentication method that is not RSA encrypted.  I have been meaning to
get around to implimenting the automatic EMAIL password requester for
quite some time... I get about 3-4 requests from people who have forgotten
their passwords a week, on a user base of 1500, I am sure larger sites
have a much heavier burden.
