MICROSOFT MAKES CASE AGAINST TURNING OVER SOURCE CODE

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is too busy for two full
days of depositions by the U.S. Department of Justice,
particularly since a host of the software giant's
executives have already answered the government's
questions, the company said in a court filing Tuesday.

Microsoft and the Justice Department, which is suing the
company along with 20 state attorneys general, are
expected in U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield
Jackson's court on Thursday in an attempt to hash out
disagreements over pretrial testimony.

SUN, IBM TO UNVEIL EXPANDED JAVAOS FOR BUSINESS

Sun Microsystems and IBM on Wednesday unveiled the
results of their collaborative work on the JavaOS for
Business platform.

The Java partners announced the availability of the core
JavaOS for Business operating system, along with
development tools, an OEM development kit, device
drivers, beefed-up server-side management software, and
testing and certification programs for the platform.

U.S. HOUSE PASSES INTERNET COPYRIGHT BILL

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday approved by
a voice vote a bill that extends copyright protection
to material on the Internet.

The bill, based on treaties drafted by the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in December
of 1996, covers written material and sound recordings.
Its intent is to protect copyright holders, including
software developers, recording artists, and publishers,
from illegal electronic distribution of intellectual
property.

ORACLE TO SHIP APPLICATION SERVER 4.0 WITH IMPROVED TRANSACTION 
SUPPORT

Oracle on Aug. 25 will launch its Oracle Application
Server (AS) 4.0, hoping to prove that AS has outgrown
its Web-oriented roots, company officials said.

As previously reported, AS 4.0 will be more
transaction-focused than its ancestors, with support
for Object Transaction Server and Java transaction
services. In addition, the new version will support
Enterprise JavaBeans and CORBA, in addition to the ODBC
and JDBC standards.
