A couple of points:

1. I often do have Netscape and Eudora open at the same time, and I may
alternate back and forth if I am referencing something between the two, but
I've never been of a mindset to read email as a result of slow web loading
times. If it is that slow, then I am more likely to get damn impatient
rather than accommodating. It's a bit like saying that bumper-to-bumper
traffic is a great opportunity to get in some reading.

2. Even if load time weren't a problem, often the graphics are so annoying
and intrusive that I'd rather not see them anyway. I was recently visiting
a site which had eliminated its banner ads in favor of a box containing
text ads from five advertisers. I actually looked at it and clicked on one
which said. "Low cost computer books at Boarders." Had it been a banner, I
would have avoided looking at it. I have trained myself to discount
anything presented in banner format.

It has been next-to-impossible in many forums to criticize gee-whiz web
developments without being treated like a Luddite. But these developments
are often not only not effective, but even result in undesired effects such
as encouraging people to turn off graphics, Javascript, and Java. I
alternate as to whether I leave Java and Javascript on or off. Whenever I
hear about another security glitch which has the slight possibility of
screwing up my system (and given that I have a Mac, the possibility is
usually very small), I tend to turn off Java and Javascript at least for
awhile. It doesn't really matter if the particular problem has nothing to
do with Java or Javascript. When I read about newly discovered problems, I
am reminded that there are vulnerabilities in the system. For example, I
started trashing all unsolicited attachments quite awhile ago as a result
of such warnings.

Just this week I was thinking, "Isn't it nice that I don't have the latest
version of Eudora. One less thing to worry about." And a week before that I
was taking precautions against the AutoStart Worm, which is Mac specific.
