I just finished writing a chapter on marketing communication ethics for a
textbook. One topic was self-regulation within the industry.

One point I hadn't known before doing some research was that back at the
turn of the century Printer's Ink, a trade association, instituted some
advertising guidelines because snake oil salesmen were undermining the
credibility of all advertising.

I can see the value of some self-regulation (or at least guidelines) in
terms of the Internet. If a few companies abuse a system, this can reflect
badly and hurt the efforts of those who don't.

If some aspect of the Internet becomes characterized by the negative
efforts of a few, then everyone in the industry has a problem.

Of course, the problem with self-regulation is that there is no effective
way to punish abusers. But the companies trying to avoid problems can
attempt to set themselves apart.
