MICROSOFT SEEKS TO HAVE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT CASE THROWN OUT

As promised, Microsoft on Monday sought to have the U.S.
Department of Justice's antitrust case thrown out of
court, or at least whittled down, in the software
giant's broadest defense yet against the government.

In an 88-page motion seeking summary judgment, Microsoft
asserted that the Justice Department and 20 state
attorneys general, who filed the suit in May, have not
proved three key pieces of their case:

INPRISE TO TEAM WITH SUN ON SOLARIS TOOLS, JAVA SUPPORT

Inprise will announce Tuesday in Denver at its annual
ICON '98 user event a strategic alliance with Sun
Microsystems to bring Inprise's development wares to
the Solaris operating environment.

The partnership between Inprise, formerly Borland, and
Sun will allow the Borland-Inprise family of enterprise
application development tools to build and run on
Solaris.

SYBASE UNVEILS ENTERPRISE APPLICATION STUDIO

Sybase on Monday announced Enterprise Application
Studio, a set of development tools designed to let
companies build and deploy distributed, Web, and
client/server applications.

Enterprise Application Studio consists of PowerBuilder
6.5, PowerJ, and the Sybase Enterprise Application
Server, according to a statement from Sybase.

FINALLY, MICROSOFT RELEASES EXCHANGE 5.5 SERVICE PACK

Microsoft has made available its first service pack for
Exchange Server 5.5, almost one month after the offering
originally was scheduled for release.

Service Pack 1, posted to the Microsoft Web site last
Friday, includes X509.v3 support, an anti-spam user
interface, an organizational merge utility, a Web forms
creation/migration wizard, and Routing Object
Libraries.
