How the Web Was Won

A little free time is a dangerous thing...

Press Release
Launch of forkinthehead.com
August 10, 1998
Victoria, BC

---------------------------

First the telegram, then the strippergram and now the fork-a-gram.

Today sees the big and noisy launch of a new web site created by three
Vancouver Island entrepreneurs. The owners of this 'irreverent but
strangely useful' site are Nick Usborne, Dave Slipp and Cathie Walker.

The web site is called forkinthehead.com and it's home to the fork-a-gram.
If you're lost so far, that's ok, so are we.

What's a fork-a-gram? "It's something you send a web site owner who's web
site annoys you," according to Dave Slipp, the computer geek in this trio.

Here's the idea behind all of this. As anyone who spends much time on the
internet will tell you, there are plenty of ways for a web site to annoy you
. Some sites are too wide for your computer screen, so you have to scroll
from side to side. Some sites take forever to download onto your screen.
Some have broken links, so you can't get to where you want to.

"The problem," says Nick Usborne, "is that about 65 million people are
quietly suffering while 2.3 million horrible web sites irritate and annoy
them. The fork-o-gram finally gives people a tool with which to strike back
. But this isn't just about giving web site owners a gratuitous whack on
the head. Each fork-o-gram contains useful information that the web site
owner can use to improve the site."

If this sounds like a crazy foundation for a business to you, don't write
these guys off too quickly. The third partner in this business is Cathie
Walker. Cathie has been in the news a lot lately as the creator of the
Centre for the Easily Amused at www.amused.com. She's one of the few people
who already make a good living on the internet and now divides her time
between Victoria and New York. So how come she's involved?

"The internet is a fast evolving and very different place. When Nick first
told me what he planned with this idea, I knew we had the chance to create
something big. This is a service that is going to be loved by millions of
frustrated internet users."

"This life is a test; it is only a test. If it had been an actual life, you
would have received instructions on where to go and what to do."
