The question:
Given the talk about media convergence and the future look of =
newspapers, what will be the role of the editor and reporter and what =
skills will they need to be relevant employees in the interactive media? =
I see job postings for "online producer." Will editors and reporters =
need to expand their skills to include more technological skills?

I'll go first:
I believe more newspaper companies will realize they are information =
companies. The organization of information companies will necessarily =
include more programmers and systems folk and let the journalists be =
journalists. I think it's important for journalists to understand the =
value of telling their stories through various media and how those media =
will work together online, but I don't think the journalist needs to =
know how to make those things work together (i.e. produce the product). =
The journalist might have to learn how to shoot video, which appears to =
be a no-brainer for those of us with video cameras. The journalist also =
might have to learn how to use a digital camera which is really no =
different than using a regular camera. And audio is captured with a tape =
recorder. I don't think the fundamental skills of a journalist (a =
story-teller) will change.

Thoughts?

I'll use this discussion as the basis for a presentation I've been asked =
to give at an editorial retreat Aug. 22. Thanks in advance for your =
input.
