In response to Dave Toplikar's "shovelware" message:

We have a small Web operation separate from the print newsroom. The key
to newsroom cooperation is to impact the news desk workload as little as
possible. It also has become a union issue.

Our goal is to set up a filtering process that does not require the
newsroom to do extra coding. We only ask our newsroom to indicate
section and rank and date. Usually this information is already in the
story fields.

We use a 12-year-old SII system for news. And as clunky as it is the
newsroom only has to hit one SDK key to send to the Web.

Unfortunately, our filtering process is not perfect -- a side effect of
too little technical resources to filter the various idosyncracies of
various editors. Asking all 35 editors to code things exactly the same
is a losing battle.

Most of our stories filter cleanly. But to do a good job need to look at
them for glitches. And to be honest, to do a professional job we need to
rework headlines for the Web and watch for story references in stories
to the printed product or Web and edit them appropriately. Adding a few
URLs to related material on the Web is also valuable.

My goal is to make the daily upload of stories painless for the newsroom
and save favors from the newsroom for cooperation on big project stories
that really add an impressive dimension to a news Web site.
