MICROSOFT SAYS OPEN DEPOSITION WILL CREATE MEDIA CIRCUS

Microsoft told a federal appeals court Monday that
opening up depositions in the government's antitrust
case against it to the public will create a "media
circus" that will delay the trial.

After The New York Times, The Seattle Times, and other
news organizations requested access, U.S. District
Court Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled last week
that the depositions should be open to the public
because of a provision of the Sherman Act, which
governs antitrust cases. When the judge refused to stay
the ruling as Microsoft requested, Microsoft appealed
to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of
Columbia.

JAVA DEVELOPERS TO WAIT LONGER FOR JDK 1.2, HOTSPOT

Saying it needs more time to present a full and stable
release, the Java product team at Sun Microsystems is
again delaying the arrival of the Java Development Kit
(JDK) 1.2 by at least two months, until November.

The postponement in the delivery of the next major
release of the guts behind Java development and
deployment from early fall to late next season will
also set back the emergence of the Java HotSpot virtual
machine accelerator to near the end of the first
quarter of 1999, Sun officials said on Monday.

Microsoft and AT&T have reached a preliminary settlement
in a lawsuit AT&T filed last October seeking access to
the Windows NT 5.0 source code.

Representatives for the two companies declined to
disclose specifics of the settlement, including whether
Microsoft must relinquish the source code or pay AT&T.

IBM ASSEMBLES BROAD APP MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK

IBM on Tuesday will unveil a sweeping, Java-based
centralized application management scheme with deep
roots in its OS/2 Warp Server Workspace on Demand
technology.

Under the cross-platform scheme, dubbed Project Orion,
applications are centrally stored and managed, and
dynamically downloaded according to individual users'
profiles. The server technology will allow users to
access their own desktop, regardless of which physical
client on the network they use, and it will let
administrators centrally configure user desktops from
the server.
