I can give some perspective from the selling side of syndication...

I'm beginning to self-syndicate my tv pieces, and after talking to several
editors, opted to create my own web site--one that doesn't any sort of
online sales and one that doesn't have an agenda other than trying to
reinforce my "brand" name. I'm not attempting to "sell" anything to
visitors, which brings down the stress level for my potential markets. It's
being set up similar to the way that AP is set up with some news sites. If
a visitor to your site sees a story headlined, "Roseanne Screams At Leno
During Interview", a click may bring up the story on your site, or it may
be linked directly to my site.

And other than a couple of discreet banner ads, my entire site is just tv
stuff. And so far, it seems to be an approach that is a bit more palatable
to the average editor.

But it's certainly a problem, and one of the reasons why you see so many
sites carrying the same few wire stories. When you work with an established
media giant, you know what you're getting into. On the downside, you're
paying extra, and you end up running the same piece as 100 other news
sites
