Here's an article with information on more recent Internet Advertising
Bureau studies.

Basically it says that big, complex ads are more memorable than banner ads.

It also mentions that such ads hog bandwidth.

Once we all can get fast internet delivery, then I think you will see more
TV-style advertising. If the ad is entertaining or compelling in some way,
I think users will stick around to look at it.

But right now loading such ads would take so long that I think many people
would find ways to avoid them. And if people don't see ads, the ads don't
work.
