Here's an item from today's Media Daily:

>The New York Times' grand old promise to deliver "all the news that's fit
>to print" may need a revise. The new slogan could just as easily read "all
>the news you can afford," as the paper plans to sell its archives online
>at $2.50 per article. Like recent moves by Gannett's USA Today and others,
>the new service will be available on the newspaper's existing Web site
>( http://www.nyt.com).

Also in the recent days, USA Today debuted its service with articles at $1
a pop.

I've written a bit about news Web archives recently, and one of my
complaints is that the per-article charges are too high. For a multi-pub
archive like Nexis or Dialog, OK, a higher price is justified -- and those
services' business market will bear the price. But for a single-newspaper
archive Web system, I believe they're wasting an opportunity for a larger
consumer market with too-high prices. NYT is a great paper, but I'm sorry,
it's single articles are nowhere near worth $2.50, IMHO.

For a future column, I'd like to write about the pricing debate.

* If you have comments, please send them to me as private mail. Someone,
please justify such high archive prices for individual newspaper archive
sites. I've yet to hear a good argument.

* Also, please tell me what your Web archive system charge is per article.

Thanks!
