I didn't mean to imply that they were equivalent, I said that they were two
things we had done to solve the problem which Kathy asked about -
basically, who/what gets to be at the top of a long list which may not fit

I guess I may not have made myself clear - I didn't mean anything which
actively rotated in front of you - like a ticker, etc. I agree that these
can be more trouble than they are worth from a user's perspective.

I was referring to page content which is updated regularly (either on the
fly or by a background process) - and if done properly on a decent server
this doesn't force the user to wait any longer than any other HTML.

On-the-fly scripts like this are the basis for user-customisable pages as
well - and I would agree with you that this is the one way to keep users -
to allow them to control how and what information is presented.
