Dear online-news subscribers:

I'm very pleased to announce the latest addition to the online-news list,
the online-news Member Directory, is available in "beta" form.

Please take a look at http://www.social.com/cgi-bin/gts/on_member_dir

I think this is going to be a truly valuable component in building and
holding together the online community of worldwide interactive publishing
professionals that we've created here. Online-news members can use the
Member Directory to post their contact information, photo, description of
their business, online resume, and list of publications. This is a great
tool for you to use for networking among your colleagues around the world,
for job-hunting, for finding a consultant or expert in a particular sub-area
of our field, etc. (Those members who are hunting for a job can tag their
listing so that Web visitors to the site know to check out their resumes.)

A few profiles have been posted by members already, and I think it's great
fun just to learn more about the people who regularly contribute to
online-news.

Sounds great, right. Is there a catch? Well, sort of. To get a personalized
listing in the directory (and post your photo, publications, resume, etc.),
you must be a Supporting Member of online-news. The Member Directory is a
benefit for supporting the ongoing operation of online-news. (Possibly
we'll come up with additional benefits later.) Of course, anyone can view
the member directory without charge.

Pricing to become a member is $25 per year, or $10 for students. You can sign
up at http://www.planetarynews.com/planetary-cgi-bin/card

The list itself, and the regular online-news Web archive site, remain
unchanged; everything that was free before continues to be free. But if you
want to be included in the Member Directory, you must be a paying Supporting
Member of the list.

(Those list subscribers who've already sent in contributions to the lists
become members for one year starting today. If you've sent in money and
didn't already receive an e-mail notification about this, send me your
e-mail address.)

The Member Directory is functional today, but a few additions will be added
in the next couple weeks. The search function is coming soon, as well as a
site redesign, and a Corporate listing service. The Corporate listings, for
companies paying an annual list sponsorship ($200), will allow listings of
job openings to be posted and regularly updated throughout the year. (The
online-news list is already a great place for employers to find interactive
publishing talent. Lots of jobs have been filled as a result of the
online-news list.)

Credit for the Member Directory goes to Scott Carter, Webmaster of the
online-news Web archive site and president of Guided Tour Software, and
overall Web programming wizard. (webmaster@social.com) If the technology
behind this looks interesting, or you're interested in licensing it for use
at your site, I suggest that you contact Scott. (Or maybe just send him a
thank you; I think he did a great job!)

Scott and I welcome your feedback about this new feature of online-news.
I hope you will add your listing to the directory so that all of us that are
a part of online-news can get to know each other better. (Not to mention,
your memberships will help fund online-news so that Scott and I can continue
to offer this service to the worldwide interactive publishing community.)

(If you want to see what a full listing looks like, take a look at mine;
I've got all the options turned on. Look for Outing, Steve.)
