Could this be anything at all to do with a certain, er, UK broadsheet
newspaper's plan to do exactly this, in production at the moment? Or is this
just a happy coincidence? There's a big market in the international hotel
industry for starters.

See above. Not only is this happening now, but it has been happening for
some time (remember Compuserve's Journalist (as I think it was called))?
