<< One of the most useful resources that I found last night was the Los
Angeles County Registrar of Voters Web site. They updated the results every
15 minutes and I was able to bypass all news organizations for information
 about specific races.
Ironically, it only occurred to me to check them out after I heard a radio
report referring to it. Since the report failed to mention the URL, I
 located it with Alta Vista.

What I think several of us found -- and, of course, it is dangerous to
extract your personal connectivity experience and apply it to the Internet as
a whole, but anecdotally it does seem to hold -- that the large election
sites may have been ready for prime time but the bandwidth was not. But if
you knew of other newspapers and online news sources and specific sites not
as heavily promoted as poltiicsnow, allpolitics msnbc, et al, you could go
there, get in, around and out pretty quickly with timely information.

Something of a shame -- this was the night that all the buildup of the these
election sites pointed to, and while they did what they could you could see
it coming -- not only that several hundred or thousand visitors could give
you problems but that the sites themselves required so many image map, cgi
retrievals and so forth that even when you did get in you couldn't maneuver
as you wished.

Again, maybe this was just my experience and the dozen or so I've chatted
(computer-wise) about this, but if this was generally true I think it holds a
lesson for online content providers and these massive-alliance centers in a
time of heavy demand, under current circumstances.
