Well, right after posting my comments on the above topic I logged into
CyberTimes, where the lead story is "For Internet, 'Ways to Go' in
Elections." (http://www.nytimes.com/library/cyber/week/1107net.html).
Despite the headline, it confirmed that the sites focusing on politics and
the elections all received very heavy usage (and the sluggishness at the
Times' site was due in part to a hacker attack).
The Times' headline, indeed, is misleading. It should not be surprising
that overall Internet traffic was up only a few percentage points Tuesday
night -- after all the profile of Web users (income, education, etc.) is
consistent with the profile of the television news audience. That the
CNNs, Politics Nows, and MSNBCs were flooded at all -- and Internet traffic
was up even a small amount over normal--sounds to me like a successful
night, at least on the demand side. That headline would have been accurate
if those sites had lower normal usage.
