ONLINE-NEWSPAPERS WELCOME AND FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
===================================================================
Last updated: 3/8/94 by Steve Outing

Dear fellow newspaper folks:

Welcome to the online-newspapers mailing list! This is a PRIVATE
list, just for newspaper people, that was spun off from online-news.
Online-news, which is a public list, has gotten very busy very
fast. Lots of you complained about the high traffic, so we set up
this list so newspaper people interested in electronic publishing
would have a quiet place to meet.

This list is not being advertised on the net. If you know of other
newspaper folks who might want to join this list, tell them to send a
message to owner-online-newspapers@marketplace.com or
outings@netcom.com, with a brief description of their connection to
electronic newspapers. I'll sign them up.

WHAT IS THIS LIST ABOUT?
------------------------
Online-newspapers is an Internet mailing list on the topic of online
newspapers. It serves as a forum to discuss the evolution of newspaper
experiments in electronic publishing. It also is the place in
cyberspace where professionals working to design electronic
"newspapers" of the future meet to get to know each other and exchange
ideas.

Two years ago, there were only a few newspapers operating online
services. Today there are more than 45 newspapers operating (or about
to launch) electronic "editions." Many more -- perhaps most --
publishers today are taking a serious look at opportunities for going
digital.

Online-newspapers covers the various avenues publishers have taken on
this journey, from the commercial services -- America Online,
CompuServe, Delphi and Prodigy -- to independent BBSs, to the
Internet.

CAN WE DISCUSS OTHER ASPECTS OF JOURNALISM HERE?
------------------------------------------------
Online-newspapers is NOT a general journalism discussion list. Its
subject matter is limited to electronic publications. To keep the
traffic to a manageable level, and for subscribers to get the most out
of this list, we have elected to keep discussions limited to the topic
of online newspapers. It is primarily a communications tool for
professionals in electronic newspaper publishing. Please help us keep
this list focused.

HOW DO I POST A MESSAGE TO THE LIST?
------------------------------------
Address your message to online-newspapers@marketplace.com

This is an unmoderated list. What you post to the list is not screened
by a human. When you send a message to
online-newspapers@marketplace.com, each subscriber to this list
receives a copy of your words in his/her email box. Please behave
yourselves and consider your words carefully before posting. If you
must flame someone, send it privately; don't post it to the list.
Remember, you are responsible for what you post. Thank you for your
cooperation.

HOW CAN I REACH THE LIST OWNERS?
-------------------------------
Steve Outing manages the online-newspapers list. He can be reached at
owner-online-newspapers@marketplace.com or outings@netcom.com (voice:
510-236-2118). David Carlson of the University of Florida is
"co-owner" of the list; he can be reached at gigabit@nerix.nerdc.ufl.edu

WHO MAKES THIS LIST POSSIBLE?
-----------------------------
Online-newspapers and online-news are hosted on marketplace.com as a
public service to the journalism community by Cyberspace Development
Inc., a new company specializing in electronic publishing and
providing consulting and software development services to businesses
interested in selling their services or products via the Internet. To
find out how the Cyberspace Development team can help get your
publication online, send a message to info@marketplace.com or point
your gopher at marketplace.com. Or contact Andrew Currie at
currie@marketplace.com, voice: 303-938-8684, or fax: 303-546-9667.
Special thanks to Bryan Griffin of Cyberspace Development for setting
up this list!

DOES THE LIST ACCEPT AUTOMATED COMMANDS?
----------------------------------------
Online-newspapers runs on Brent Chapman's "Majordomo" mailing list
manager. It understands the following commands, which should be sent
to Majordomo@marketplace.com (commands must be in the BODY of the
message; subject line can be left blank).

index online-newspapers
Return an index of files you can "get" for online-newspapers.

get online-newspapers
Get a file related to online-newspapers.

who online-newspapers
Get a list of who subscribes to online-newspapers.

help
Find out more about the automated server and the commands
   it understands.

More than one request can be put in one message, as long as each
is on a separate line. All will be returned as email.

(Currently this list has only these limited capabilities. We plan to
upgrade it in the future, so watch this space.)

WHAT WILL BECOME OF ONLINE-NEWS?
--------------------------------
The online-news list continues to go strong, with nearly 500 subscribers from 26
countries as of this writing. It has evolved
into a very active forum on electronic publishing, with subscribers
representing a wide range of professional and academic interests.

If you can handle the message traffic, we encourage you to subscribe
to both online-news and online-newspapers. We as newspaper professionals have
much we can learn from people outside our
business, as well as from each other.

To subscribe to online-news, just follow the same directions as
for this list, but put "subscribe online-news" in the message.
