It's always a feedback loop.  The press release shows up and reporters 
follow-up with interviews.  The means of communication is a funciton of 
deadlines.

These days, there is more access than you might think.

I would invite you to go browsing through the usenet news groups.  The 
contributors run the spectrum from Washington Pundits to Volunteers who 
work in the Shelters.

The people listening are interesting too.  Some of these groups are more 
like meeting at the well or the town square or the park

The ability of the net to quickly capture a snapshot of public opinion 
from the a wide spectrum is acutally quite amazing.
