A simpler answer is that e-mail sent to 1,000,000 users can result in 
1,000,000 angry responses, including the attachment of a 1 megabyte GIF 
of "Bill the Cat" or miss september.  If you have a 1 Tarabyte storage
system that is just waiting to be filled, go ahead and try it :-).

Just remember , some of these e-mail systems are very persistant.
