The most important secret to making money is simple. ASK!
To get people's attention and loyalty, you will need to offer some "free"
services. But simply putting a "push this button to give me $5/month" will
net many positive responses.
In many ways, the Web is a reflection of life. Panhandlers in New York
can make $100/day just by asking for money. Not bad when you consider
that it's tax free. Microsoft makes $400 for a word-processor similar to
one that sells for $40 on the net. People pay it because Microsoft asks.
Generate agreement that your web page is worth something, that reading it
will somehow enhance their lives, and they will pay generously. InfoSeek
charges 10 cents/page for usenet pages! They can't keep up with the
demand. Their catch is that they sell in bulk ($10/100 pages), and
provide a searchable text retrievable database of over 30 days worth of
Usenet News. If you are an human resources manager looking for new-hires,
a quick search of misc.jobs.wanted can be pure gold. If your a laid-off
programmer, the ability to have your choice of 3 firm offers within 7
days is also pure gold. Do you think your "personals" page might be worth
5 cents/listing - (hint: do the "paragraph", then offer a link to a full
web page including picture, personal information, and very personal
information. You could reap $2/visitor in a few days. You may have to
clone your servers to keep up with the traffic.
