One of the interesting issues that has come up in recent years is that
research is done using predominantly male subjects. We're expendable
guinea pigs, but try and get your insurance company to pay a claim.
Men generally don't see a doctor during the onset of a serious infection
because they have to work. Michael Jackson is the ultimate example,
working until he was within 15 minutes of dying of dehydration from a
dysentary infection, because he felt he had to.
Women will see a doctor very early on in the process because their
relationship to their own bodies is different. They know that their
physical condition is important, and are more inclined to seek medical
attention as soon as unusual symptoms occur.
Women also put more abuse on their bodies. Diets, high impact excercise,
low body fat, excessive hygene, and excessive medical treatment,
especially with antibiotics (for vaginal infections) and hormones (birth
control pills) often cause breakdowns in the autoimmune system such as
Candida (fungus in the bloodstream).
The net result is that the Medical Industry makes a fortune from women on
everything from soaps and cosmetics to surgical procedures. In many
cases the treatment is worse than the disease.
Of course, these problems are also most common among women who use their
physical appearance for their livelihood (strippers, cocktail waitresses,
lovers, and "trophy wives"). Of course, when the looks fade, the woman
is no longer capable of supporting herself and becomes "disabled". The
cost of vanity is then thrust onto the single middle-class, post-divorce,
male.
Congratulations guys. Not only do you get to pay for the mother of your
children, you also get to pay the medical bills for the ones you wanted
but could never have.

Those numbers are the tip of the ice-burg.
