I cover the history of newspaper BBSs a little bit in my 1995 Online Newspaper 
Report (Jupiter Communications). The oldest operating newspaper online service 
is the Fort Worth Star Telegram's StarText system, launched in 1982. I believe 
Paul Harral monitors this list, so perhaps he can provide some additional 
historical detail. There was another newspaper BBS that came a few months 
before StarText, but it's no longer around. If there's an earlier one that 
I missed, there's bound to be somebody on this list who can correct me. 

Adam Gaffin, formerly of the Middlesex News, claims that the News was the first 
general circulation commercial newspaper to create an Internet-based service 
in 1993. There probably are examples of college papers going online before 
Middlesex. 

A good source of historical information about new media is David Shedden, 
researcher and archivist at the Poynter Institute. He's at dbs@poynter.org
