Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Brainard, Brand Names, and Beastie Boys
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

Is BigBook playing hard to get? Not for long. Ned Brainard gives you the
inside skinny in Monday's Flux.

The Picon Punch, a refreshing spritzer with a complex lineage, makes us
nostalgic for an Old World we never knew. Cocktail follows the
genealogical bouncing ball through Belgium, France, and Italy to San
Francisco's North Beach, where we sip up and watch the fog roll in.

Rumors that HotWired's floating-palette menu bar (mentioned in last
week's HotFlash) floated off the edge of the screen during testing and
sailed into the ether are unfounded. It's coming soon - we promise.

The beta test of HotWired's new Java chat system is still going on, and
you're invited.

Is this the end of science? The feathers fly in Brain Tennis this week
as Stuart Kauffman of the Santa Fe Institute debates John Horgan.

Watch each weekday for a new Dream Job. Coming up this week: Planet Out,
MCNY, the Phoenix New Times, i-traffic, and Ponton.

In Market Forces, David Kline argues that big brand names matter even
more online than in the brick-and-mortar commercial world - despite the
notion of the Net as a "level playing field."

Coming this week in Ask Dr. Weil: The good doc pours a tea for
asthmatics on Monday, takes on Transcendental Meditation's critics on
Tuesday, dives into the shark cartilage debate on Wednesday, sniffs at
anti-perspirants on Thursday, and on Friday, suggests a better approach
to vitamin X (MDMA).

The Netizen celebrates the federal court ruling against the
much-despised Communications Decency Act. Plus: John Heilemann reports
from Russia on their presidential elections, Jon Katz enlists Geek Force
commandos, and more.

If you can't make it to San Francisco this weekend for the Chili
Peppers, Bjork, and the Beastie Boys at the Concert for Tibet, you can
still catch most of the action on Pop. On Saturday, 15 June, and Sunday,
16 June, Pop will present 18 hours of live concert Netcasts, produced by
SonicNet.

On Monday, Antenna picks up cultural signals on all frequencies, from
warm puppies to Japanese gangsters. On Tuesday, find out why music
editor Rob Levine prefers Beck's new album to Patti Smith's long-awaited
comeback. "The Rock" rocked Ann Hodgman's world: impalings, melted skin,
and a naked Nick Cage add up to the perfect "film as recreational drug,"
in Movies on Wednesday. And on Thursday, Gallery features the work of
Taro Chiezo, who engineers sculptural hybrids that meld opposing worlds:
a calf-engine, a lamb-banana, a household appliance that's half deer and
half vacuum cleaner. In Pop.

This Week's Guests in Club Wired:

Jacob Weisberg, author of "In Defense of Government: The Fall and Rise
of Public Trust," joins us on Monday in WiredSide audio chat to talk
about a "new progressivism" that acknowledges big government's failures
and excesses, but doesn't abandon its commitment to the poor.

Monday night, meet the Posies. The Seattle-based band is on tour to
support the recently released "Amazing Disgrace" (DGC), an album of
hard-hitting, irresistibly catchy guitar-pop. We'll play tracks from
their album during the event. Pop music editor Rob Levine hosts.

Surrealist author Michael Kandel joins us in HeadSpace Tuesday night to
talk about his newest novel, "Panda Ray" (St. Martin's Press), an odd
tale that straddles the line between cosmic adventure and family drama.

Michael Burton, a journalist and media activist based in Austin, Texas,
illuminates the similarities between McCarthy-era blacklisting and
attempts to regulate the Net. Burton has researched the life of First
Amendment rights pioneer John Henry Faulk since 1989, when he conducted
a series of interviews for his biography, "The Making of a Liberated
Mind."

Check the Club Wired schedule for detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads. If you've forgotten yours,
all you have to do is (1) reply to this message; (2) change the subject
line to read PASSWORD (that's important); and (3) write us a
one-sentence note with your name, email address, and membername (if you
remember it). It's that easy.
