Does anyone see the problems inherent in the piecemeal approach to
staffing exemplified in Phil's discussion below? Too much overlapping
division of labor, driving production over-reliance on very junior people,
resulting in too many indians per unit output.....inefficiency.

Writers should do their own HTML according to a style template set by
editors. Many writers could also handle their own art, too, especially
with a bit of guidance, and a file of examples. You do not need four
individuals inputing to each article....especially if you want to have a
bottomline........

If you adequately cross-train, journalists can perform the production
chores for themselves, in less than 10% of their time. Maybe you
spoonfeed the older prima-donnas, but junior writers should be handling
their own HTML, and editors should set templates to help them do
so........at least if you want the publisher to have enough margin to fund
the next cycle of capital spending.

xerx's 2 cents............
