Which brings me back to my original question.

And based on the responses so there's not a great deal of agreement on
this issue. Where you stand depends upon where you sit.I am a neophyte
when it comes to publishing. Working on a supersite was my first
real exposure to journalism. I have no professinal baggage when it
comes to the role of the writer. My job was to hold the readers attention
for fifteen minutes. Phil Barrets post was a response to my
request for a postion as a "content producer". And I was looking for
advice.

I expect in the near future, graduates will prepare for a career
in online publishing much like thier print and tv counterparts. Instead of
migrating from one field into anouther they might spend their entire
professional lives in a digital medium. The tools of the trade will be a
frontend web editor and a grahics program. At the very least writers
with a background in Web publishing will have a greater understanding of the
medium and it's limitations.
