How the Web Was Won

The following three paragraphs are excerpted from a much longer 8/26 issue
of PC Week. They outline what I have been calling Pay per Use (as opposed
to Pay per View, PPV, in cable business jargon) PPU on this list for many
moons now. This capability will spawn new/better models for many types of
publishing, including COMMERCIAL LISTS. Subscriptions and/or Advertsing
are NOT the only way to go, even for a single serial. A combination of
remuneration methods may / can work best for different types of readers of
the same pub.

>As services of all types begin providing information via the World Wide
Web, interest in digital cash is beginning to pick up. Now, some companies
have begun investigating a subset of electronic money called microcash,
which allows vendors to charge pennies (or less) for small amounts of
content.

Designers of microcash systems envision at least two markets: traditional
print publishers that seek to gain revenue by offering electronic versions
of the information they provide in hard copy and a new market of
self-publishers that strive to use the Web to offer specialized content to
discrete groups of users.

While microcash--and its big brother, digital cash--are still in the early
stages of development, organizations interested in selling information over
the Internet would be well-advised to keep track of the unfolding
standards, as some designers may be able to offer ready-to-use systems
>within a year's time.
