Jon Franklin replies:

I believe this is correct and, if it is, it will inject a revolutionary
set of new forces into journalism.  We will be working directly for the
customer -- something that will certainly have its drawbacks, I'm sure,
but they will be different drawbacks.  Micropayments also may mean that a
significant portion of the revenue can go to the writer, raising quality
throughout the business.  Several of us are putting together a web site
(tentatively named *bylines*) where major work by journalists will be sold
for very small amounts of money on a pay-per-read basis.  We will
guarantee that more than half the gross revenue will be returned to the
individual writer, on basis of how much his specific work sells.  I
understand that a lot of folks don't think this will work, but others of 
us do.  And consider the implications if we are right.
