ANNOUNCEMENT: VIRTUAL STORY ASSIGNMENT 1996

We will be participating September 27 to October 4 in the eighth annual
Electronic Photojournalism Workshop, sponsored by the National Press
Photographers Association (NPPA). It will be held this year in San
Antonio, TX. Currently we are in discussions with several of the
workshop's corporate sponsors about possible additional support with
their latest technologies for imaging and publishing -- more details to
follow.

We'll be uploading most of the work created in San Antonio to the
workshop's home (http://sunsite.unc.edu/nppa/epw8home.html) on the NPPA
web site. Whenever possible, we encourage participants to develop their
own web sites for this project, and we will maintain a master link to
all Virtual projects from EPW8 Online. For those who don't have access
to a web server, we plan to offer one or two  alternate solutions.

The project is meant to provide an opportunity not only to be part of
the workshop, but to experience the possibilities of global,
collaborative journalism. This year we again strongly encourage the
participation of universities, colleges and schools across the country,
and across the world.

A week or so prior to the workshop, we will distribute the final
description of an assignment that is similar in theme to one being
reported in San Antonio. In addition, we will post the workshop's style
and ethical guidelines to insure a degree of consistency among the
participating sites. Each school ideally will create teams similar to
the EPW format, under the supervision of a faculty member who assumes
responsibility for that school's work.

At this time, we would like to hear from any schools/faculty/classes
that would like to participate, and to receive the following information
from each:

-- name of school and faculty sponsor(s) -- phone number, email and home
page addresses -- which platform(s) you are using (Mac and/or PC) --
which version and which imaging program(s) you are using -- which
version and which web authoring and browsing tools you are using

Please respond no later than September 20.

--- Story theme: The Political Community

We are assigning virtual participants to profile their respective
communities, across the United States and worldwide, with an emphasis on
the impact of local politics and government elections. That is, identify
and report on the some of the significant issues, ideas, personalities,
and experiences that distinguish life in the city and area where you
live. Each reporting team should narrow its specific approach to focus
on one aspect of this general theme, remembering that these stories will
be viewed as part of a collaborative effort. In the weeks ahead, we'll
be defining several common sub-categories in which stories will be
indexed and cross-linked. The design of the main site will require that
participating sites follow the same linking structure so that we can
weave this together as a cohesive, comprehensive site and project, even
though the content will be widely dispersed.

Remember, this project is intended primarily to be published on line, so
the challlenge is to break away from traditional ways of storytelling.
We encourage participant teams to build around the strengths of the Web
-- consider in advance how a particular story might be told in a
non-linear fashion and on different levels using multiple media formats,
how you can create interactivity and perhaps directly involve the local
community in some way (establish chat and feedback sections), and
research and then link to relevant contextual materials. In short,
consider ways to experiment with all the tools in the new media toolbox.
On the other hand, don't necessarily try to use all the tools in every
story -- that's not the point of multimedia -- instead, use the right
tool(s) to tell the particular story. But do try to go beyond a
traditional print approach.
