The Miami Herald's Online Services Division is seeking to fill a key
leadership position on our team.

Because we have a small group and a wide variety of challenges, the exact
title and job description will depend on the skills and interests of the
applicants. But the person we're looking for will play an important role in
helping manage this new and many-faceted department. Here are a few of the
qualities we are looking for: a vision for online content, a track record of
leadership and good judgment, a high level of comfort with computers and
technology and a commitment to staff development.

In a growing, changing organization, the job description for this opening
could be positioned in a number of different ways. Here are a couple of
possibilities:

	(1) A position with overall day-to-day responsibility for the editorial
content of our services. He or she would serve as our point person in
relations with the Herald and El Nuevo newsrooms and be expected to play a
key role in setting priorities for developing new content areas and
maintaining the ongoing content.

	(2) A leadership position working with the online services manager to
manage various aspects of the department. In this role, a person might still
spend a lot of time on editorial content, but his or her duties might also
encompass other areas such as marketing and promotion, business management
or collaboration with computer programmers. An understanding of how the
different divisions of a large newspaper company work would be very helpful.

Whatever the job description, we're looking for someone who's capable of
managing this department -- and would do so if the online services manager
is not around. But we're not looking for an administrator; this job will be
very "hands-on." Like the rest of the team, this person would probably end
up doing just about everything we do, from building World Wide Web pages to
answering e-mail and phone calls from the public. Bottom line: on any given
day, you'll do whatever has to be done.

Among the experience that might be helpful in this job: World Wide Web page
design, computer-assisted research and reporting, graphic artistry,
marketing and promotion, computer programming, newspaper copy editing and
page design. We're looking for someone who is flexible, dedicated and able
to work collaboratively with a diverse group of colleagues in a constantly
changing landscape. The ability to write, edit and converse in both
English and Spanish would be a plus.

Please send a resume and a note outlining why you think you're right for
this job to Rich Gordon, the online services manager, at rgordon@herald.com,
or via snailmail to him at 1 Herald Plaza, Miami, Fla. 33132. (IMPORTANT
NOTE: If you send via e-mail, PLEASE don't send the resume as an attachment
-- embed it as text in your message. Thanks!)
