Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Wiring Minds Want to Know
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

Maybe you're sick. Maybe you're curious. Maybe you're impatient by
nature. If your health questions can't wait, you can get instant answers
on everything from acne to zinc from Dr. Weil's new database, launching
this Tuesday. And check out the doc's daily Q&As: head lice, reefer, and
more.

So your health is golden but you've still got questions? This week we
launch the research tool of research tools, Wired Source, the WIRED
editors' gateway to real info on the Net. Finally, an Uzi for
librarians.

Cocktail celebrates Chile's independence day this week with the Pisco
Sour, a festive drink that loosens the tongue, sharpens the wit, and has
been known to give the birthrate a little boost.

It's a go for the merger between Turner and Time Warner, so where will
Pathfinder "go"? Ned Brainard spies oddly clenched jaws.

Feeling an urge to read spreadsheets in your browser window? Neither are
we. Luke Knowland looks at intranet plug-ins this week and asks, "Why?"
There's also a peek at the new browser lines for the fall season (bright
colors are back!) and a truly demented demo, in Webmonkey.

In Packet, Michael Schrage says it's time to reinvent game shows for the
Net (we'll take the curtain) - and make someone a bundle in the bargain.
Check out Schrage, Andrew Leonard, Simson Garfinkel, and John
McChesney's HotSeat.

Every geek child likes to play, but Boston's Computer Museum - that's a
little bit of heaven. Dream Jobs has tracked down an open position
there, along with an engineering slot at First Virtual, an art-fringe
experience at The Kitchen, and more.

On Wednesday our current Brain Tennis debate comes to a close
(deadlocked or resolved?). Echo's Stacy Horn praises virtual
communities; Suck's Ana Marie Cox disses them.

John Heilemann, Jon Katz, and our roster of mystery columnists put the
fear of scrod into DC's biggest fish. Catch it all this week in The
Netizen.

Animal testing deservedly receives a lot of attention - but what about
research done on human guinea pigs? This Thursday, Pop reads "Guinea Pig
Zero," a zine for human pharmaceutical research subjects. Plus: John
Alderman explores Asia's southern megacities, Ian Christe keeps a
QuickCam diary, Harmon Leon busts "Cops," and Surf du Jour goes where
love and commerce meet - with a pit stop for a worm sandwich.

This Tuesday we launch HotWired AudioFile, a one-stop shop for all of
our audio programs, both music and talk - with dramatically improved
audio quality. Stop by, select a program, and listen while you browse.

This Week's Guests in Club Wired:

US Representative Anna Eshoo appears in WiredSide Chat Tuesday. As one
of the founders of the bipartisan Internet Caucus, Eshoo (D-California)
has been attempting to drag Congress, kicking and screaming, into the
21st century - and that means relaxing export standards on encryption.

Tuesday in Head Space: James Gunn's 50-year career in science fiction
has helped shape the genre's evolution. Meet the master craftsman,
critic, and celebrator of sci-fi, and discuss his creations - from "The
Immortals" (Bantam, 1962) to "The Joy Machine" (Pocket, 1996), his
recent realization of a "Star Trek" plot conceived by Theodore Sturgeon.

Wednesday's PacketChat: Simson Garfinkel and host Brooke Shelby Biggs
discuss the challenges Java will face before its promise can be
realized.

One of the great things about the Web is its free-will angle: You don't
have to waste time looking at stuff you didn't ask for. But now some
sites are sending unsolicited slogans and advertisements scrolling
across our browser windows. In Thursday's PacketChat, columnist Andrew
Leonard wonders if we're soon to become helpless Web potatoes, being
spoon-fed our hypertext experience.

Christopher Frankonis created CyberPOLIS, a context for the practical
implementation of online democracy. Join Frankonis and host Jon
Lebkowsky in Electronic Frontiers on Thursday.

Frederik L. Schodt, author of the cult classic "Manga! Manga! The World
of Japanese Comics" (Kodansha International, 1983) - which raised
American awareness of the sometimes strange, sometimes kitschy beauty of
Japanese cartoonists' work - has written a sequel. Friday in Pop Talk.

Check the Club Wired schedule for detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads. If you've forgotten yours,
all you have to do is (1) reply to this message; (2) change the subject
line to read PASSWORD (that's important); and (3) write us a
one-sentence note with your name, email address, and membername (if you
remember it).

Or call our toll-free support services number: +1 (888) 276 8777.
