This is the second of our new job postings. This job is a
supervisory-level ("H Scale") position under our Newspaper Guild
contract, and pays about $1,091 per week.

I think it's worth pointing out that we're not looking for somebody to
hack HTML versions of news stories together -- we have a very slick,
highly automated system in place. This is an opportunity to do creative
work on special content, including innovative database-driven
applications. You need to be an HTML wizard and a content wizard and a
user-interface wizard, and above all a team player.

The job description follows.

September 17, 1996

Job Description: Web Producer (Online Services Department)

The Online Services Department has an opening for a Web producer to
work on Star Tribune Online and related services on the Internet's World
Wide Web. This person will be responsible for taking content, graphics
and page (screen) designs and creating the HTML coding necessary to
create Web pages. The person will work on a daily basis with the online
news editors and graphics personnel to provide the formatting
necessary to launch new editorial services and features.

The person will report initially to Steve Yelvington, editor/manager of
Star
Tribune Online, and to Bob Schafer, publisher of Star Tribune Online. He
or she will also maintain close working relationships with online copy
editors and assistant news editors. The work can include editing and
formatting of the daily news content of Star Tribune Online and
editorial
content of other Web services launched by the Star Tribune. The person
will also work with the Web specialist on some editorial features
requiring advanced html programming.

Qualifications: This position requires the skills of both a journalist
and a
person knowledgeable in html programming. Applicants should have at
least two years of newsroom experience or its equivalent and be fluent
in html. Substantive experience with forms, tables, frames, plug-in
applications and other non-html tools is highly desirable. Basic
knowledge of Java is desirable but not required.

The person should be familiar with the capabilities and limitations of
popular Web browsers and should have strong knowledge of the
limitations of the Web as a publishing medium. The person should have a
sense of what makes Web sites good or bad and the ability to keep up
with a rapidly changing environment. The person should have excellent
communication skills and be adept in working in a collaborative
environment.

This is a Guild H-Scale position. The hours are to be arranged, but are
likely to be a combination of afternoon and evening hours. Some
weekend work is possible.

To apply: Contact Steve Yelvington or Bob Schafer by September 30,
1996. If possible, include Web site URLs that demonstrate previous work
along with your resume.
