Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Primate Tech
+--+--+--+--+--+

That darn floating toolbar: You love it, you hate it, you've never even
seen it. Whichever group you're in (we've heard from all three), this
Thursday Webmonkey will show you how to break out of that browser window
and make a toolbar of your very own. Plus: imagemaps, browser stats,
failed plug-ins, and more, in Webmonkey, a service station for the wired
world.

     http://www.webmonkey.com/

A service station of another sort, Cocktail samples a classic concoction
weekly. This time it's the Frisco - bourbon and benedictine with a touch
of lemon.

Miss Millicent, your Uzi's waiting in the library foyer: Check out Wired
Source, the WIRED editors' gateway to real info on the Net.

     http://www.wired.com/wiredsource/

So many maladies, so little time! Doc Weil's new database talks right
back to you, giving instant info on hundreds of health topics. And don't
neglect the doc's daily Q&As - on lead poisoning, antioxidant cocktails,
and more.

     http://www.drweil.com/

Speaking of ill health: Being struck by lightning was a setback for
Factory (it took down their T1), but IDG's wild child shook it off with
a quickness. Dream Jobs has the buzz on an open position there - along
with a 3-D graphics spot at id, a "junior genius" slot at Australia's
Wide West, and others.

This week Ned Brainard isolates a strain of cyberhysteria that thrives
amid paper and ink. A dark pathology diagnosed, in Flux.

Naughty bits, nice bits - bits are bits, so how bad can data be? Pretty
nasty, according to some. John Perry Barlow and Bruce Taylor argue Net
censorship this week in Brain Tennis.

     http://www.wired.com/braintennis/

And in The Netizen, John Heilemann, Jon Katz, and a clutch of other
commentators (political, post-political, and proto-something-as-yet-
unheard-of) act up once again.

Fun and games have a different flavor in Marine Doom, the military's
spin on the popular computer game. Andrew Leonard explains how the US
Marine Corps uses their version to teach recruits how to play for keeps.
Look for Leonard's cultural coverage, Michael Schrage on markets, Simson
Garfinkel on technology, and John McChesney's HotSeat, in Packet.

Syd Mead's credit on "Blade Runner" reads "visual futurist." Friday in
Pop's Events, this brilliant stylist talks about his drawings, the
future, and the "supersonic baroque." Also in Pop this week: Rob Levine
insists that prog rock has its charms, Mike Tanner finds mixed emotions
underlying David Mamet's coarse language, and Surf du Jour delves into
the dangers of bad design.

This Week's Guests in Club Wired:

Tuesday in Head Space: During the last few years, former dancer,
candymonger, and research-lab mousekeeper Poppy Z. Brite has become one
of the brightest (or darkest) stars in the firmament of American
fantasy/gothic fiction. Poppy joins host Martha Soukup to discuss her
new novel, "Exquisite Corpse" (Simon & Schuster, 1996).

With its promise of platform independence, Java was widely touted as the
key to Apple's phoenix-like rise from the ashes left by Microsoft's
Windows 95 campaign. In Wednesday's PacketChat, Simson Garfinkel looks
at how Apple is once again playing catch-up to the maneuverings of
Microsoft.

The military gave us the Internet, and now the Internet is giving
something back: a version of Doom to train soldiers in combat skills.
Andrew Leonard discusses real-time Doom in the decidedly unimaginary
battlefield, Thursday in PacketChat.

Later on Thursday: Net law expert Jonathan Wallace publishes The Ethical
Spectacle, a webzine devoted to ethics, law, and politics, and he
co-authored the recent "Sex, Laws, and Cyberspace" (Henry Holt & Co.,
1996). Join Wallace and host Jon Lebkowsky in Electronic Frontiers.

Friday in Pop Talk: The Jesus Lizard's unsavory lyrics, visceral vocals,
and guitar assault strategies have enabled the Chicago-based quartet to
resist being lumped in with today's Buzz Bin "alterna-metal" acts. Now
the Lizard is as aggro as ever - even after moving to a major label.
Join lead singer David Yow and Pop's music editor Rob Levine for a live
audio chat.

Check the Club Wired schedule for detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads. If you've forgotten yours,
all you have to do is (1) reply to this message; (2) change the subject
line to read PASSWORD (that's important); and (3) write us a
one-sentence note with your name, email address, and membername (if you
remember it).

Or call our toll-free support services number: +1 (888) 276 8777.
