In the U.S., Congress has passed specific laws giving the Olympics
organization supra-trademark protection over the use of the word "Olympic"
and related terms and marks.  (And this might have influenced Mark's
post.) I don't know how that may pertain to an "Atlanta1996" mark though. 

This protection (written about in the Wall Street Journal in the past, 
among others) meant that the Olympics Committee could make an 
Atlanta-based greek restaurant change its name, regardless of the fact 
that the restaurant had been there long before Billy Payne decided to 
bring the Olympics to Atlanta.

Of course, I have no idea what similar laws (if any) exist in Australia.
