Richard,
As I recall, these were so-called "institutional" ads, not commercial
(e.g. product-promoting) advertisements. That is, they promoted the
Mobil image, not its gas, oil motor club, or services.
I would liken these ads to what you find on PBS (in fact, Mobil does
sponsor programs like Masterpiece Theatre in the same manner - without
pushing products) and Public Radio stations.
There's a difference, no?
