How the Web Was Won
Subject: Re: Washington Post vs. the Net From: Richard Layman Date: Fri, 16 Feb 1996 11:02:03 -0800 (PST)

I don't know Alan, it's hard for me to get worked up, I'm just resigned.

When even the New York Times misidentifies what http means (on the front
page of one Monday's business section), they called it the hypertext
markup language, and in a recent column Walter Mossberg misidentifies
the www. part of a URL as referring to the Web rather than a
subdomain/server, I can hardly expect Inside Edition or the Washington
Post to be much better wrt trolling for underage sexual partners in a
chat room or using many-to-many communications methods to complain about
how some family treats their daughter.

We had a similar thread along time ago (I remember Eric Meyer writing
about having written about "dumpster divers" getting credit card numbers
to buy computer equipment, and it being treated by national media as an
example of "hackers" running amok).

The "war" between the different interpretations of Kevin Mitnick, as
demonstrated by Jonathan Littman vs. John Markoff in terms of two very
different books is another example.

I do think the Grahams are pretty smart, but I can't imagine they are
directing their editors to trash the 'net.
