How the Web Was Won
Subject: Re: Query From: "Web post" Date: Sat, 22 Jun 1996 16:30:04 -0400 (EDT)

Just saw post from Rosalind Taylor and reviewed the C/net article entitled
Engines do some soul-searching.
Paying for position on the search engine is not a question of integrity.

It is a more basic economic question. The major advantage of the internet
was that there was for the first time a level playing field for both
the small home based business as well as the large corporation.

If money can buy position on the web, and the high paid executives of the the major corporations
can ever figure out how marketing and sales work on the web, it has the
potential of hurting those companies that cannot generate sufficient
cash-flow to incorporate a meaningful advertising promotion to get the
exposure necessary on the web.

I for one would much prefer a level playing field but the final
decision will rest with the people controlling the search engines and
the consumers that are desired to give up their disposable income.
