Rory O'Connor of the Mercury News staff reported on the Net sex myths in
today's paper. One of the conclusions, which shouldn't be surprising to this
group::

"But the public perception that the personal computer and modem represent a
frightening explosion in the traffic in explicit sex and pedophilia doesn't
appear to be accurate. It is unlikely that kids will simply wander into
Inter-smut without deliberately seeking it out, because the number of
objectionable sites is far fewer than most people believe.

"An examination of two popular indexes of available material on the Internet
shows that sex-related discussion topics and World Wide Web sites account for
only 0.2 percent to 0.4 percent of the millions of pages of public on-line
data.

"One of the World Wide Web's most popular and heavily visited sites is Yahoo,
a huge index of Internet sites that 1.4 million people use per week as a
reference center to guide them around the vast Net. Yahoo tracks and
categorizes about 50,000 different sites around the Internet, ranging from
the home pages of computer companies to on-line catalogs to news sources."
